Published in J Sex Med, Vol. 6 (9), pp. 2579-90
Methodology
Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial: 93 postmenopausal women with low sexual desire, not using estrogen, took 50 mg DHEA or placebo daily for 52 weeks; efficacy assessed at 26 weeks.
Key Findings
No significant difference from placebo in satisfying sexual events per month, the Sabbatsberg Sexual Self-Rating Scale, well-being or menopause quality of life. More women on DHEA had acne and increased hair growth.
Conclusions
50 mg/day DHEA did not improve sexual function over placebo in postmenopausal women with low libido.
Limitations
Moderate sample size; women on estrogen therapy were excluded, so it does not test DHEA as an add-on to HT.
Supplements Studied
resulted in no significant improvements in sexual function over PL therapy over 26 weeks
