Methodology
Double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomised multicentre trial in 249 children with recurrent respiratory infections in Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Serbia. Children took a chewable pleuran supplement with vitamin D and zinc, or vitamin D and zinc alone, for 3 months between October and March; 217 completed.
Key Findings
Total respiratory infections were 15.2% lower with pleuran (2.35 vs 2.77; P=0.042) and common colds 18.6% lower (1.53 vs 1.88; P=0.040). Effects were clearer in children over 6 and appeared after the first month, and tonsillopharyngitis was less frequent and shorter. Compliance was 98.7% with only mild adverse events.
Conclusions
The authors concluded that the chewable pleuran supplement reduced respiratory infections in children with recurrent infections, with a quick onset and good safety.
Limitations
Same research group as the earlier pleuran trials. Three months of follow-up. Benefits were concentrated in children over 6. Branded product.
