Published in Arch Intern Med, Vol. 167 (5), pp. 497-501

    Methodology

MEGA population-based case-control study in the Netherlands: DNA from 4,375 patients with a first deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism and 4,856 controls, with questionnaire data on other risk factors.

    Key Findings

C677T was not associated with venous thrombosis: OR 0.99 (0.91-1.08) for CT and 0.94 (0.81-1.08) for TT, with no association in any risk-factor subgroup.

    Conclusions

Mildly raised homocysteine from MTHFR TT does not appear to cause venous thrombosis, and there is no clinical rationale for measuring the variant.

    Limitations

    Case-control design; single country.
