Methodology
Randomised trial in 162 patients with bleeding, non-prolapsed hemorrhoids (colonoscopy to exclude other disease): ispaghula (psyllium) husk alone, rubber band ligation plus ispaghula, or micronized purified flavonoid fraction (MPFF) plus ispaghula. Blinded observers recorded time to bleeding stopping and recurrences.
Key Findings
Bleeding stopped after a mean 10.6 days with ispaghula alone, 5.6 days with banding plus ispaghula and 3.9 days with MPFF plus ispaghula (P = 0.03). Recurrence at 6 months: 12%, 21% and 5.1% (P = 0.075, not significant). No complications reported.
Conclusions
Adding MPFF to fiber stopped bleeding fastest; fiber alone worked more slowly.
Limitations
No placebo or no-treatment arm, so the fiber-alone result is not a placebo-controlled effect; single centre; unequal group sizes.
Supplements Studied
used with fiber supplements rapidly and safely relieved bleeding
