Meta-Analysis of Usefulness of Psyllium Fiber as Adjuvant Antilipid Therapy to Enhance Cholesterol Lowering Efficacy of Statins
Brum J, Ramsey D, McRorie J, Bauer B, Kopecky SL
Published in Am J Cardiol, Vol. 122 (7), pp. 1169-1174
Methodology
Systematic review and meta-analysis of three RCTs (4-12 weeks) comparing psyllium plus a statin with the statin alone.
Key Findings
Combination treatment lowered cholesterol more than the statin alone (P = 0.001); the extra LDL reduction was equivalent to doubling the statin dose.
Conclusions
Psyllium taken before meals adds to the efficacy of statins.
Limitations
Only three trials; short duration.
Supplements Studied
Psyllium Husk
Fiber
