Effects of medical therapies on retinopathy progression in type 2 diabetes: the ACCORD Eye Study

ACCORD Study Group, ACCORD Eye Study Group, Chew EY, Ambrosius WT, Davis MD, Danis RP, et al.

Published in New England Journal of Medicine, Vol. 363 (3), pp. 233-44

    Methodology

Randomised factorial trial of intensive glycaemic, lipid and blood pressure control with 4-year retinopathy imaging endpoints.

    Key Findings

Intensive glycaemic control and fenofibrate-statin therapy slowed retinopathy progression; blood pressure lowering did not.

    Conclusions

Blood glucose control, not blood pressure lowering, protects diabetic vision.

    Limitations

Type 2 diabetes only; no supplement arms.
