Mechanism of hypokalemia in magnesium deficiency
Huang CL, Kuo E
Published in J Am Soc Nephrol, Vol. 18 (10), pp. 2649-52
Methodology
Mechanistic review of why magnesium deficiency causes potassium wasting.
Key Findings
Magnesium deficiency aggravates hypokalemia and makes it refractory to potassium treatment by increasing distal potassium secretion (a fall in intracellular magnesium releases inhibition of ROMK channels). Magnesium deficiency alone does not necessarily cause hypokalemia.
Conclusions
Concomitant magnesium deficiency should be corrected to treat hypokalemia.
Limitations
Review of mechanisms, largely from physiological studies.
