Published in Eur J Nutr, Vol. 65 (2), pp. 60
Methodology
Cross-sectional and prospective analyses of the Swiss CoLaus|PsyCoLaus population cohort (3,887 at first follow-up); self-reported magnesium supplement use, sleep questionnaires and polysomnography.
Key Findings
Magnesium users were more likely to report night cramps or restless legs, and baseline users had a higher incidence of night cramps at follow-up. No differences in polysomnography.
Conclusions
Magnesium supplementation did not prevent night cramps and was not consistently associated with sleep parameters.
Limitations
Observational; people with cramps may start magnesium (reverse causation); self-reported use; few users (4.5-7.9%).
Supplements Studied
Magnesium supplementation did not prevent night cramps
