Published in Am J Med, Vol. 136 (2), pp. 200-206

    Methodology

Case series of all adjudicated cases in the US Drug-Induced Liver Injury Network (2004-2022) in which turmeric was an implicated product, with chemical analysis of products and HLA genotyping.

    Key Findings

Ten cases, all since 2011 and 6 since 2017; injury was hepatocellular in 9. Five people were hospitalised and 1 died of acute liver failure. Turmeric was confirmed in all 7 products tested, 3 of which also contained piperine. Seven people carried HLA-B*35:01. Latency was 1-4 months.

    Conclusions

Turmeric can cause potentially severe, typically hepatocellular liver injury, and reported cases appear to be increasing in the United States.

    Limitations

Case series without a denominator, so it cannot estimate how common liver injury is.
