Laxatives after hemorrhoidectomy
Johnson CD, Budd J, Ward AJ
Published in Dis Colon Rectum, Vol. 30 (10), pp. 780-1
Methodology
Randomised study of 30 patients after Milligan-Morgan hemorrhoidectomy: wheat fiber added to the diet (17) versus a laxative regime of sterculia, magnesium sulfate and mineral oil (13).
Key Findings
Wheat fiber gave a shorter hospital stay (median 4 vs 5 days, P < .01), less pain after defecation at discharge (P < .05) and less fecal leakage (5/17 vs 10/13, P < .05).
Conclusions
Wheat fiber after hemorrhoidectomy produced a satisfactory bowel habit with less leakage and pain than the laxative regime.
Limitations
Very small, unblinded, 1987; compares fiber with another laxative regime rather than with no treatment.
Supplements Studied
wheat fiber added to the diet will produce a satisfactory bowel habit
