Methodology
Cochrane review of randomised and quasi-randomised trials of treatments for constipation in pregnancy; four studies included, two (180 women) contributed data.
Key Findings
In one trial of 40 women, fiber supplements raised stool frequency by 2.24 times a week versus no intervention (95% CI 0.96-3.52) and reduced hard stools. Stimulant laxatives improved constipation more than bulk-forming laxatives but caused more abdominal discomfort.
Conclusions
Evidence is insufficient overall; fiber may increase stool frequency in pregnancy.
Limitations
Very few, small trials with unclear randomisation and moderate risk of bias; no meta-analysis possible.
Supplements Studied
fibre supplementation may increase frequency of stools compared with no intervention
