Published in Phytother Res, Vol. 14 (3), pp. 213-4
Methodology
Uncontrolled study: 14 adults whose stools tested positive for Blastocystis hominis, Entamoeba hartmanni or Endolimax nana took 600 mg emulsified oil of Mediterranean oregano daily for 6 weeks, with stool retesting.
Key Findings
Entamoeba hartmanni disappeared in all four cases and Endolimax nana in the one case; Blastocystis hominis disappeared in eight cases and its scores fell in three more. Gastrointestinal symptoms improved in 7 of the 11 people with Blastocystis.
Conclusions
Emulsified oregano oil was associated with clearing of some intestinal parasites over 6 weeks.
Limitations
No control group, very small sample, short report; some of these organisms can clear or fluctuate on their own, so the study cannot show the oil caused the change.
