Hypokalemia and sudden cardiac death
Kjeldsen K
Published in Exp Clin Cardiol, Vol. 15 (4), pp. e96-9
Methodology
Narrative review of hypokalemia, arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death.
Key Findings
Hypokalemia is present in 7% to 17% of patients with cardiovascular disease, up to 20% of hospitalized patients and up to 40% of patients on diuretics. It is associated with higher risk of arrhythmia and with higher all-cause, cardiovascular and heart-failure mortality.
Conclusions
More attention to potassium may benefit patients at risk of fatal arrhythmia.
Limitations
Narrative review, not systematic; prevalence figures are pooled from varied settings.
