Methodology
Systematic review and meta-analysis of in situ randomized trials in people under 25 comparing fluoride-free hydroxyapatite toothpaste with fluoride toothpaste for remineralization and demineralization; 68 records screened, 4 studies eligible.
Key Findings
New lesion development and progression showed no significant differences between hydroxyapatite and fluoride toothpastes (risk ratio 0.98, 95% CI 0.85 to 1.12; odds ratio 0.90, 95% CI 0.57 to 1.42).
Conclusions
Hydroxyapatite toothpaste could be an effective alternative to fluoride in preventing caries progression and promoting enamel remineralization.
Limitations
Only four in situ trials; in situ models are not real-life cavities; participants under 25 only.
Supplements Studied
no significant differences between HAP and fluoride toothpastes
