Methodology
Triple-blind randomized trial in 610 Italian schoolchildren aged 4 to 7: toothpastes with fluoride-substituted hydroxyapatite complex (1000 and 1450 ppm fluoride) versus monofluorophosphate toothpastes at the same fluoride levels, brushing three times a day for 24 months; ICDAS caries scoring; 518 finished.
Key Findings
Severe-lesion increment at 24 months was lower with the hydroxyapatite-fluoride toothpastes in primary teeth (0.18 vs 0.27, P = 0.04 and 0.16 vs 0.30, P = 0.01) and permanent teeth, with risk reductions of about 38-39% in primary and 29% in permanent dentition.
Conclusions
Toothpastes containing biomimetic hydroxyapatite plus fluoride reduced caries increment in children more than conventional fluoride toothpastes over 2 years.
Limitations
The tested products combined hydroxyapatite with fluoride, so the benefit cannot be credited to hydroxyapatite alone; 15% attrition; children only.
Supplements Studied
reduces caries increment in children over a period of 2 years more than traditional fluoridated toothpastes
