Published in Eur J Gastroenterol Hepatol, Vol. 27 (9), pp. 1002-10
Methodology
Systematic review and meta-analysis of 22 randomised or crossover trials comparing fiber with placebo in outpatients with irritable bowel syndrome.
Key Findings
Fiber improved global symptoms (RR 1.27, 95% CI 1.05-1.54). Soluble fiber improved global symptoms (RR 1.49) and abdominal pain scores; insoluble fiber improved no outcome.
Conclusions
Soluble fiber appears to help IBS symptoms; there is no evidence for insoluble fiber.
Limitations
Moderate heterogeneity and moderate risk of bias across trials.
Supplements Studied
