Methodology
Randomized controlled trial in healthy older men comparing a twice-daily multi-ingredient supplement (protein, creatine, vitamin D, omega-3) with carbohydrate control for 6 weeks alone and a further 12 weeks with exercise training.
Key Findings
TNF-alpha and IL-6 concentrations were progressively reduced over time in the supplement group, with no change observed in the control group.
Conclusions
A multi-ingredient supplement, particularly combined with exercise training, can lower systemic inflammatory markers in healthy older men.
Limitations
Small single-sex sample, multi-ingredient design prevents attribution to any single nutrient, biomarker-only outcomes.
Outcomes Measured
Tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) concentrations were progressively reduced (P-time < 0.05) in the SUPP group.
