    Methodology

    Systematic review of botanical, phytochemical, pharmacological and toxicological literature on Arctii Fructus across multiple databases and pharmacopoeias.

    Key Findings

    More than 200 compounds have been identified, mainly lignans (arctiin, arctigenin), phenolic acids and terpenoids, with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antidiabetic and antitumour activity reported almost entirely in preclinical models.

    Conclusions

    Arctium lappa contains well-characterised bioactive lignans, but supporting pharmacology is preclinical and clinical confirmation is lacking.

    Limitations

    Reviews fruit rather than root, dominated by in vitro and animal data, no meta-analysis of human outcomes.
