Published in Nutrients
Methodology
Monocentric randomised double-blind placebo-controlled trial of B. bifidum PRL2010 given from the 36th gestational week through breastfeeding to atopy-risk mothers, with infant atopic dermatitis assessed over the first 12 months.
Key Findings
Proportionally fewer children in the probiotic group developed atopic dermatitis, but statistical analysis showed no significant difference versus placebo; among infants with severe AD, the probiotic group had a better clinical course. No severe adverse effects were reported.
Conclusions
Maternal B. bifidum PRL2010 supplementation is safe and potentially beneficial, but this trial did not demonstrate significant prevention of atopic dermatitis.
Limitations
Single centre with limited power; primary prevention endpoint not met; follow-up limited to 12 months.
Supplements Studied
Although proportionally fewer children with AD were in the probiotic group, the statistical analysis showed no significant differences between the probiotic and placebo groups.
