Gabapentin for refractory chronic cough: a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial
Ryan NM, Birring SS, Gibson PG
Published in The Lancet
Methodology
Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of gabapentin up to 1800 mg/day for 10 weeks in adults with refractory chronic cough >8 weeks
Key Findings
Gabapentin significantly improved cough-specific quality of life (Leicester Cough Questionnaire) versus placebo at 8 weeks; benefit was lost after treatment stopped and side effects (nausea, fatigue) were common
Conclusions
Central neuromodulation can improve refractory chronic cough, supporting a cough hypersensitivity mechanism
Limitations
Single centre, small sample, effect not sustained after withdrawal
