    Effect of administration of β-hydroxy-β-methyl butyrate-enriched formula after liver transplantation: A pilot randomized controlled trial

    Methodology

    Pilot randomised controlled trial in 33 adult living-donor liver transplant recipients given two daily packs of calcium-HMB 1500 mg, L-arginine 7000 mg and L-glutamine 7000 mg for 30 postoperative days alongside rehabilitation, with grip strength at 2 months as primary endpoint

    Key Findings

    The HMB/arginine/glutamine formula was tested for postoperative sarcopenia, grip strength and skeletal muscle index recovery after transplantation in a pilot setting.

    Conclusions

    HMB-enriched formulas are a plausible adjunct for muscle recovery after major illness, but pilot-scale evidence is preliminary.

    Limitations

    Very small single-centre pilot, open design, transplant-specific population.
