Methodology
Randomized, double-blind, multicentre parallel-group active-comparator trial of HMPL-004 1,200 mg/day vs slow-release mesalazine 4,500 mg/day in mild-to-moderate ulcerative colitis.
Key Findings
Clinical remission and response were 21% and 76% with HMPL-004 vs 16% and 82% with mesalazine; endoscopic remission 28% vs 24%. No significant difference between groups.
Conclusions
HMPL-004 may be an efficacious alternative to mesalazine in ulcerative colitis.
Limitations
No placebo arm, so equivalence cannot separate drug effect from natural remission; single-country (China) sample and modest size limit precision.
