Published in Dermatologic Therapy
Methodology
Randomized assessor-blinded trial of hydroxypropyl chitosan nail lacquer alone versus lacquer plus oral biotin 10 mg/day for 4 months, Onychodystrophy Global Severity Score
Key Findings
Onychodystrophy score fell 57% with lacquer alone and 62% with lacquer plus biotin; 53% vs 80% of subjects achieved >=50% reduction (p=.05)
Conclusions
Topical lacquer alone gives clinically relevant improvement; added oral biotin gave only borderline extra benefit
Limitations
Small sample, no placebo arm, unequal baseline severity between groups
Supplements Studied
Twenty-six were randomly assigned to HPC-NL and 24 to the HPC-NL and biotin, 10 mg/daily (+B).
