Published in Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity
Methodology
Systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials of berberine, alone or added to oral hypoglycaemic agents, in adults with type 2 diabetes.
Key Findings
Berberine significantly reduced fasting plasma glucose, postprandial glucose and HbA1c, and also improved total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides compared with control.
Conclusions
Berberine improves both glycaemic and lipid profiles in type 2 diabetes and may be a useful adjunct to conventional therapy.
Limitations
Most included trials were small, conducted in China, and of moderate methodological quality; publication bias possible.
Supplements Studied
