Published in World J Gastroenterol, Vol. 9 (8), pp. 1832-3

    Methodology

Double-blind randomised trial in 54 adults with acute intestinal amoebiasis (bloody mucous diarrhoea with red-cell-engulfing trophozoites in stool). All received metronidazole 750 mg and iodoquinol 630 mg three times daily for 10 days; one group also took lyophilised S. boulardii 250 mg three times daily.

    Key Findings

Diarrhoea lasted 12.0 h with S. boulardii vs 48.0 h without (P<0.0001); fever and abdominal pain lasted 12 h vs 24 h (P<0.001). Headache duration did not differ. At week 4, amoebic cysts were found in 5 of 27 (18.5%) without the yeast and none with it (P<0.02).

    Conclusions

Adding S. boulardii to antibiotics appeared to shorten symptoms and cyst passage in acute amoebiasis.

    Limitations

Small trial; placebo use and allocation concealment are not described in the abstract; very short symptom durations in both arms; no replication in adults.

    Supplements Studied
