Monthly high-dose vitamin D treatment for the prevention of functional decline: a randomized clinical trial

    Bischoff-Ferrari HA, Dawson-Hughes B, Orav EJ

    Published in JAMA Internal Medicine

    Methodology

    One-year double-blind RCT comparing 24 000 IU/month, 60 000 IU/month and 24 000 IU plus calcifediol in seniors with prior fall.

    Key Findings

Higher monthly doses improved 25(OH)D levels but did not improve lower extremity function and were associated with a significantly higher rate of falls (66.9% vs 47.9%).

    Conclusions

High-dose intermittent vitamin D increases rather than reduces falls.

    Limitations

Single centre, modest sample, intermittent high-dose regimen only.
