Key Findings
This systematic review of PubMed, Cochrane and Embase to 6 August 2020 synthesised evidence on the skin microbiome, the gut microbiome and treatment in rosacea. It describes the cutaneous microbiome and its inflammatory effects as central to current theories of rosacea, and reviews reported associations with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease and Helicobacter pylori infection. The authors call for future work on the specific mechanisms linking gut pathology to rosacea and on whether treating the gut relieves skin symptoms.
Conclusions
Gut and skin microbiome alterations are linked to rosacea; probiotic strategies remain unproven.
Limitations
A narrative synthesis with no pooled estimates or quality grading; the gut-skin associations described are drawn largely from observational studies and do not establish that treating the gut improves rosacea.
