Peppermint oil in the acute treatment of tension-type headache

    Göbel H, et al

    Published in Der Schmerz

    Methodology

Narrative review of controlled studies and guideline recommendations on topical 10% peppermint oil in ethanol for the acute treatment of tension-type headache.

    Key Findings

This German review reports that topical peppermint oil (oleum menthae piperitae) has proven significantly more effective than placebo for tension-type headache in controlled studies, with efficacy comparable to acetylsalicylic acid or paracetamol. Peppermint oil is described as targeting headache mechanisms in several ways. Ten per cent peppermint oil in ethanol is licensed in Germany for tension-type headache in adults and children over 6 and is included in professional society guidelines as a standard acute treatment.

    Conclusions

Topical peppermint oil is significantly more effective than placebo in controlled studies and is regarded as a standard acute treatment for tension-type headache.

    Limitations

A narrative review rather than a systematic review or meta-analysis, with no pooled effect sizes and no formal risk of bias assessment of the underlying trials; the licensing and guideline status described is specific to Germany.

    Supplements Studied
