Cannabidiol for moderate-severe insomnia: a randomized controlled pilot trial of 150 mg of nightly dosing

Narayan AJ, Downey LA, Rose S, Di Natale L, Hayley AC

Published in Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine

    Methodology

Randomised, placebo-controlled, parallel-group pilot with single-blind placebo run-in and 2-week double-blind sublingual dosing of 150 mg cannabidiol nightly, measured by wrist actigraphy, sleep diaries and validated questionnaires

    Key Findings

Insomnia severity, self-reported sleep onset latency, sleep efficiency and wake after sleep onset did not differ between cannabidiol and placebo; the cannabidiol group reported greater well-being and had better objective sleep efficiency after 2 weeks.

    Conclusions

Nightly 150 mg cannabidiol did not improve insomnia symptoms relative to placebo in this pilot trial.

    Limitations

Small pilot sample, short duration, single dose level, and mixed objective versus subjective findings.
