Published in Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition

    Methodology

Double-blind randomised trial in 18 Polish national-team rowers given 500 mg Astragalus membranaceus root or placebo over a six-week training camp, with cytokine and lymphocyte subpopulation measurement around a 2000 m ergometer test.

    Key Findings

Supplemented rowers maintained baseline NK and T regulatory cell counts and increased TCR-delta-gamma cells relative to placebo, with altered IL-2 and IL-2/IL-10 responses to maximal exertion.

    Conclusions

Astragalus root extract helped restore immunological balance in strenuously trained athletes through stabilisation of NK and Treg cells and cytokine modulation.

    Limitations

Very small sample, elite athletes only, surrogate immune markers rather than clinical infection endpoints.

    Supplements Studied

AMR restored the immunological balance in strenuously trained athlets through a stabilization of NK and Treg cells.

    Outcomes Measured

AMR restored the immunological balance in strenuously trained athlets through a stabilization of NK and Treg cells with a positive trend in Tdg towards Th1 response.
