Methodology
Randomised comparison of two doses of rye grass pollen extract (750 mg versus 375 mg twice a day) for 4 years in 240 men with BPH and an IPSS above 7. No placebo group.
Key Findings
The higher dose improved IPSS (20.1 to 10.5), prostate volume, residual urine and maximum flow more than the lower dose (P < 0.0001). Urinary retention (5 vs 16) and surgery (2 vs 8) were less frequent on the higher dose. PSA did not change significantly in either group, and no adverse effects were observed.
Conclusions
Long-term treatment at 750 mg may work faster and better than 375 mg in improving symptoms and preventing progression of BPH.
Limitations
No placebo or untreated group, so it compares doses only; blinding not described; published in Chinese with an English abstract; the setting is not described in the abstract.
Supplements Studied
Long-term administration of cernilton at the dose of 750 mg may achieve faster and more obvious efficacy
