Published in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice
Methodology
Systematic review with meta-analysis of 15 placebo-controlled RCTs of ginseng in menopausal women, six databases to April 2022, Cochrane RoB 2.0
Key Findings
Ginseng reduced menopausal symptoms (SMD -0.40, 95% CI -0.73 to -0.07) and hot flashes (SMD -0.34), but pooled sexual function results were null (SMD 0.31, 95% CI -0.30 to 0.92, P = 0.32). No effect on vaginal maturation index or vaginal pH.
Conclusions
Ginseng eases hot flashes and general menopausal symptoms but did not improve sexual function in pooled analysis.
Limitations
Most included trials at concern for bias; small samples; heterogeneous ginseng preparations
Supplements Studied
The meta-analysis of three other studies failed to show that ginseng was beneficial for sexual function (n = 491; SMD: 0.31, 95% CI: -0.30 to 0.92, P = 0.32)
Outcomes Measured
The meta-analysis of three other studies failed to show that ginseng was beneficial for sexual function (n = 491; SMD: 0.31, 95% CI: -0.30 to 0.92, P = 0.32)
