Methodology
Single-centre double-blind placebo-controlled pilot trial (DITTO): 60 women predicted to have poor ovarian reserve took DHEA 75 mg a day or placebo for at least 12 weeks before a long-protocol IVF cycle; 52 were analysed.
Key Findings
DHEA levels rose, but eggs retrieved (median 4 vs 4; P = 0.54) and live birth (7/27, 26% vs 8/25, 32%; RR 0.74, 95% CI 0.22 to 2.48) were similar, as were oocyte quality markers.
Conclusions
DHEA pre-treatment did not improve ovarian response, oocyte quality or live birth in women with predicted poor ovarian reserve, though the trial had low statistical power.
Limitations
Small proof-of-principle trial; eight participants excluded from analysis; underpowered for live birth.
