Methodology
Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial at nine Chinese fertility centres: 821 women with poor ovarian response (Bologna criteria) took DHEA (n = 410) or placebo (n = 411) for 4-12 weeks before IVF and embryo transfer. Primary outcome: live birth after the first transfer.
Key Findings
Live birth occurred in 36 of 410 women (8.8%) on DHEA and 37 of 411 (9.0%) on placebo (relative risk 0.98, 95% CI 0.63 to 1.51; p = 0.911). Eggs retrieved, clinical pregnancy, pregnancy loss and cumulative live birth did not differ.
Conclusions
DHEA before IVF had no beneficial effect on live birth compared with placebo in poor ovarian responders.
Limitations
The DHEA dose is not given in the abstract; low baseline live birth rate in this population.
Supplements Studied
DHEA administration prior to IVF-ET had no beneficial effect on the live birth rate
Outcomes Measured
no significant difference observed between groups
