Methodology
Prospective double-blinded trial randomizing 80 chronic spontaneous urticaria patients to low (4,200 IU/week) or high (28,000 IU/week) vitamin D3 for 12 weeks.
Key Findings
Both groups reduced total urticaria severity scores; the high-dose group improved significantly more at week 6 for severity and at weeks 6 and 12 for quality of life. Medication scores fell equally in both arms.
Conclusions
Higher-dose vitamin D3 supplementation provides additional benefit for symptom severity and quality of life in chronic spontaneous urticaria.
Limitations
No true placebo arm (dose comparison only), single centre, short duration, subjective outcome scores.
Supplements Studied
Quality of life score was also significantly reduced; decrement in group 2 score was significant compared to group 1 at both weeks 6 (P = 0.005) and 12 (P = 0.007).
