Methodology
Open-label randomised trial in 132 Indian children aged 6 months to 12 years with nutritional rickets, given 2,000 IU of vitamin D3 daily for 12 weeks, or 60,000 IU weekly for 3 weeks, or 60,000 IU weekly for 6 weeks.
Key Findings
Complete radiological healing at 12 weeks in 75% (daily), 60.5% and 61.9% (weekly groups); P = 0.15. The fall in X-ray score and the final 25-hydroxyvitamin D were greater in the daily group.
Conclusions
Radiological scores at the end were comparable between daily and weekly vitamin D, with a greater change from baseline in the daily group.
Limitations
Open-label; 12 of 132 children did not complete; one country; healing judged at 12 weeks only.
Supplements Studied
Radiological scores were comparable at endline among daily and weekly vitamin D groups
