Published in Phytotherapy Research
Methodology
Meta-analysis of 9 RCTs (10 effect sizes) in metabolic syndrome and related disorders, databases searched to August 2018
Key Findings
No overall effect on fasting plasma glucose, HOMA-IR or HbA1c. Subgroup analyses found lower fasting glucose in trials lasting >=8 weeks and using >=500 mg/day.
Conclusions
Quercetin does not broadly improve glycemic control; any benefit requires longer duration and higher doses.
Limitations
Few trials, exploratory subgroups, heterogeneous metabolic populations.
Supplements Studied
The pooled findings indicated that quercetin supplementation did not affect fasting plasma glucose, homeostasis model of assessment-estimated insulin resistance, and hemoglobin A1c levels
