Nutritional therapy for reducing disability and improving activities of daily living in people after stroke
Sakai K, Niimi M, Momosaki R, Hoshino E
Published in Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews
Methodology
Cochrane systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials comparing nutritional therapy (including oral nutritional supplements) with placebo or usual care for disability and activities of daily living after stroke
Key Findings
Nutritional therapy after stroke showed limited and uncertain effects on disability and activities of daily living, with evidence certainty generally low.
Conclusions
Nutrition support is worthwhile for malnourished recovering patients but should not be expected to drive functional recovery on its own.
Limitations
Small heterogeneous trials, varied nutrition protocols, low certainty of evidence.
Outcomes Measured
Poor nutritional status is a common issue amongst these patients, and malnutrition can severely impact their functional recovery post-stroke.
