Methodology
PRISMA systematic review (PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, MEDLINE) of curcumin supplementation in SLE and lupus nephritis, covering human trials, human in vitro studies and mouse models.
Key Findings
Three double-blind, placebo-controlled human trials were found, with 14 to 39 patients and 4 to 12 weeks of treatment. Curcumin lowered 24-hour and spot proteinuria, but C3, dsDNA and SLEDAI did not change. Mouse studies used much higher doses (12.5-200 mg/kg/day).
Conclusions
Data suggest a potential benefit, but no dose can be advised until long, large trials are done in SLE subgroups including lupus nephritis.
Limitations
Few, small, heterogeneous trials; most mechanistic data come from mice; no pooled estimate.
