Methodology
Systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of 70 randomised controlled trials (96 effect sizes, 4,159 adults) searched to March 2022.
Key Findings
CLA reduced body mass by 0.35 kg, BMI by 0.15, waist circumference by 0.62 cm, fat mass by 0.44 kg and body fat percentage by 0.77%, and raised fat-free mass by 0.27 kg. In high-quality trials, fat mass and body fat percentage did not change.
Conclusions
CLA may produce small improvements in body composition that are unlikely to be clinically important; high-quality trials do not support a fat-lowering effect.
Limitations
Large heterogeneity across trials, doses and populations.
Supplements Studied
small but significant improvement in anthropometric and body composition markers
Outcomes Measured
data from high-quality studies failed to show CLA's body fat-lowering properties
