Efficacy of conjugated linoleic acid for reducing fat mass: a meta-analysis in humans

Whigham LD, Watras AC, Schoeller DA

Published in Am J Clin Nutr, Vol. 85 (5), pp. 1203-11

    Methodology

Meta-analysis of 18 randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled human trials that measured body composition with a validated method; dose and duration modelled.

    Key Findings

Fat loss versus placebo was 0.024 kg per gram of CLA per week (P=0.03). At the median dose of 3.2 g/day, fat mass fell 0.09 kg a week more than with placebo (P<0.001). The effect was linear for up to 6 months and then levelled off by 2 years.

    Conclusions

At 3.2 g/day, CLA produces a modest loss of body fat in humans.

    Limitations

PubMed-only search; pooled small trials with mixed isomer preparations; single-isomer comparisons were inconclusive.

    Supplements Studied

CLA produces a modest loss in body fat in humans

    Outcomes Measured

produced a reduction in fat mass for the CLA group
