Published in Nutr Res, Vol. 110, pp. 33-43
Methodology
12-week randomised, double-blind trial in 78 otherwise healthy adults with overweight or obesity: vitamin D3 1,000 IU plus 360 mg magnesium glycinate, vitamin D3 alone, or placebo.
Key Findings
Combined supplementation raised 25-hydroxyvitamin D versus placebo but did not change osteocalcin, bone-specific alkaline phosphatase, CTX or glycaemic measures.
Conclusions
Combined vitamin D and magnesium did not improve bone turnover markers or glycaemic control over 12 weeks.
Limitations
Short; bone turnover markers only; participants did not have osteoporosis.
Supplements Studied
Combined supplementation was not associated with short-term improvements in glycemic indices or bone turnover markers
Outcomes Measured
there were no differences in serum concentrations of total osteocalcin
