    Methodology

Randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial conducted November 2009 to April 2011; anti-stretch mark cream versus the same cream without active ingredients during pregnancy; incidence and severity of striae gravidarum.

    Key Findings

Pregnant women were randomised to a cream containing hydroxyprolisilane-C, rosehip oil, Centella asiatica triterpenes and vitamin E or an identical cream without the active ingredients. Overall stretch mark incidence did not differ (37.6% treated versus 33.3% control, not significant), but severity of pre-existing stretch marks increased significantly in controls (17.8%, p = 0.001) and not in the treated group (6.3%). Among women who developed new marks, the rise in severity was smaller with treatment (0.14 versus 0.47, p = 0.031), and in women with no stretch marks at baseline incidence was 5.6% with treatment versus 35% with control (p = 0.031, OR 9.2, 95% CI 1.0-83.3).

    Conclusions

The use of the anti-stretch mark product is proved to be effective in reducing severity of the striae during pregnancy, prevents the appearance of new striae and halts progression of those already present.

    Limitations

The primary comparison of overall incidence was null and the positive results come from subgroups, with a very wide confidence interval (1.0 to 83.3) in the no-baseline-striae group; the abstract does not state the total number enrolled.
