    Andersen T, Fogh J

Published in Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics

    Methodology

Placebo-controlled study of the YGD herbal preparation (yerba mate, guarana, damiana) on gastric emptying and body weight in overweight adults

    Key Findings

The YGD preparation slowed gastric emptying and produced significantly greater weight loss than placebo over the treatment period.

    Conclusions

A damiana-containing herbal blend delayed gastric emptying and aided short-term weight loss; damiana alone was not tested.

    Limitations

Very small sample; short duration; three-herb combination including caffeine sources; single trial not replicated.

    Supplements Studied

One such mixed herbal preparation is 'YGD' containing Yerbe Maté (leaves of Ilex paraguayenis), Guarana (seeds of Paullinia cupana) and Damiana (leaves of Turnera diffusa var. aphrodisiaca).
