Methodology
Randomised, placebo-controlled crossover pilot in 7 adults with quiescent ulcerative colitis comparing high-molecular-weight carrageenan with an oat beta-glucan placebo; primary endpoint was the Simple Clinical Colitis Activity Index after 7 days.
Key Findings
No significant differences in colitis activity or any inflammation, permeability or LPS marker between carrageenan and placebo periods. Total gastrointestinal symptoms were higher at the end of the placebo period (20.8 vs 13.3; P = 0.031).
Conclusions
Short-term use of food-grade carrageenan appeared safe in people with ulcerative colitis, but robust human studies are still needed.
Limitations
Seven participants and one-week periods; underpowered to detect harm; isolated carrageenan, not whole seaweed.
Supplements Studied
short-term usage of food-grade carrageenan is safe among people with UC
