Methodology
18-month double-blind randomized non-inferiority trial in 189 adults: fluoride-free hydroxyapatite toothpaste versus 1450 ppm sodium fluoride toothpaste; primary outcome the share of people with no increase in DMFS (decayed, missing, filled surfaces).
Key Findings
Per protocol, no DMFS increase was seen in 89.3% of the hydroxyapatite group and 87.4% of the fluoride group; hydroxyapatite was not statistically inferior to fluoride.
Conclusions
Hydroxyapatite toothpaste was a safe and efficient anticaries agent in this adult trial.
Limitations
The non-inferiority margin was 20%; 189 adults; most participants had no new caries on either product, which limits sensitivity to differences; authors include hydroxyapatite-field researchers.
Supplements Studied
