Choline-Containing Phospholipids in Stroke Treatment: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Methodology
Systematic review and meta-analysis of PubMed/Medline, Scopus and Web of Science covering citicoline and choline alphoscerate in acute and hemorrhagic stroke; 15 studies with 8,357 subjects pooled using odds ratios and mean differences.
Key Findings
Citicoline did not improve neurological function (OR 1.05, 95% CI 0.87-1.27) or functional recovery (OR 1.36, 95% CI 0.99-1.87). Choline alphoscerate improved neurological function and functional recovery on the Mathew scale and MMSE.
Conclusions
Choline alphoscerate, unlike citicoline, was associated with improved neurological and functional recovery in stroke patients.
Limitations
Choline alphoscerate stroke data come from fewer and older, largely open-label studies than the citicoline evidence; pooled populations and outcome scales are heterogeneous.
Supplements Studied
Citicoline did not improve the neurological or functional outcomes in acute stroke patients. In contrast, choline alphoscerate improved neurological function and functional recovery and reduced dependency in stroke patients.
