Methodology
Systematic review and meta-analysis of 10 randomized controlled trials and 3 intensive adverse-event monitoring studies of oral Andrographis paniculata monotherapy across respiratory infection, diarrhoea and autoimmune disease.
Key Findings
Pooled serious adverse events were very rare (0.02 per 1,000 patients), while non-serious adverse events were common (102.6 per 1,000 in RCTs), most often gastrointestinal or skin and subcutaneous reactions.
Conclusions
Andrographis paniculata appears generally safe, but users should be advised about and monitored for common non-serious adverse effects.
Limitations
Included trials were mostly short and used varied extracts and doses, adverse-event reporting quality was inconsistent, and wide confidence intervals reflect sparse data.
Supplements Studied
Incidence of serious AEs was very rare with the pooled incidence (95% CI) from RCTs of 0.02 per 1000 patients (0.0-0.5).
