    Effects of iron supplementation on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children

    Methodology

    Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot trial of oral iron 80 mg/day for 12 weeks in non-anaemic children with ADHD and low serum ferritin.

    Key Findings

    ADHD Rating Scale scores improved progressively with iron and the change approached but did not reach statistical significance versus placebo; Clinical Global Impression improved significantly.

    Conclusions

    Iron may benefit ADHD symptoms in children with low ferritin, but the pilot was underpowered.

    Limitations

    Very small sample; pilot design; primary endpoint not statistically significant.
