    Published in Neurology

    Methodology

Sixteen-week randomised double-blind placebo-controlled multicentre US trial of huperzine A 200 or 400 micrograms twice daily in mild to moderate Alzheimer disease

    Key Findings

The primary outcome, change in ADAS-Cog at week 16, did not differ from placebo at 200 micrograms twice daily; a possible signal at the higher dose was a secondary finding only.

    Conclusions

A rigorously conducted US trial failed to confirm the cognitive benefit reported in earlier Chinese studies.

    Limitations

Modest sample size; 16-week duration; higher dose underpowered.
